What is SARS virus?

 
SARS is an acronym for severe acute respiratory syndrome. According to the World Health Organization, the coronavirus was identified as the official cause of SARS. The initial outbreak of SARS was first reported in February of 2003 in Asia and quickly spread to more than two dozen North American, South American European and Asian countries.  The progression of the disease was mapped by scientists working at the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia. The map was shared with scientists worldwide and is seen as an important step in fighting SARS worldwide.
 SARS is a severe illness with symptoms that include severe muscle pain, fever and headache and the onset of respiratory problems that include pneumonia, dyspnea and a harsh cough.  SARS patients are also found to have less lymphocytes circulating in the blood. As the virus progresses, symptoms will also include sore throat, runny nose, diarrhea and an upper respiratory infection.  When pneumonia is suspected a chest x-ray will be ordered. If the x-ray reveals no fluid and SARS is still suspected, an HRCT scan is ordered.
